Saying Goodbye to AiR Rae Swan
We recently said farewell to our April – May Artist in Residence, Rae Swan. We had such an amazing time getting to know Rae and their practice. While we were sad to see them go, we are happy for them to get back to their beloved home in Winnipeg!
While they were here, Rae was on a mission to explore and experience St. John’s, taking inspiration from the surrounding land and sea. They also shared an artist talk and demo with us towards the end of their residency, sharing the thought behind their lens-based practice and their photo transfer techniques.
Rae shared a few words with us in reflection of their residency:
“My time at Eastern Edge was incredibly inspiring and invigorating. I spent time in the studio space and lots of time outside, with the land, developing a project that explores our interaction to the land and how we familiarize ourselves with new places. Over the six weeks I was able to complete a photo-sculpture series where pictures of the coast were turned into gloss gel transfers. The translucent transfers were layered with paint and each other, becoming warped, obscured and textured. I’ll miss basking in the mist of the teal blue ocean and the very lovely people. My deepest thank you to the whole Eastern Edge team for sharing such hospitality and joy during my time there. I hope to visit Newfoundland again sometime soon!”
We want to thank Rae for everything as well, and wish them the best in their future endeavours! We hope our paths will cross again some day soon!
