Arts for Equity: Anti-Racism in the workplace with Laurabel Mba Consulting

Laurabel Mba Consulting was hired by Eastern Edge through our Arts for Equity project to facilitate an anti-racism training session. Laurabel taught us that anti-racism is a lifelong, active commitment to listening, learning, and using personal privilege to challenge systemic discrimination and support marginalized groups.  In the context of an artist-run centre, Laurabel helped us understand how to apply anti-racism to our work, policies and public events, and how to act when racism shows up.

Big Takeaways:

Commit to continuous growth: Accept that allyship is an imperfect process requiring constant self-reflection, humility, and a willingness to make and correct mistakes.

Educate ourselves: Read books, watch documentaries, and research history independently without placing the emotional or educational burden on racialized individuals.

Listen actively: Prioritize the voices, lived experiences, and explicit demands of marginalized communities.

Amplify voices: Use your platform, spaces, or social reach to share and elevate the work and stories of racialized people.

Intervene and speak up: Call out casual racism, micro-aggressions, and discriminatory policies when you witness them in your workplace, school, or social circles.

Acknowledge privilege: Recognize unearned societal advantages and take responsibility for understanding how systemic inequalities operate.
