SOUVENIR DOCUMENTS: Ashley Hemmings
rOGUE Gallery
Oct 27th – Nov 24th
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 27th, from 7–10 pm
“…the project became about exploring the disconnect between the human body and the landscape. Emphasizing the distance between the places where we think we are doing good, and do not realize we are wrong. I had thought that forcefully removing plants from the ground and adorning my body with their impressions would bring me closer to the land, but it only ever made me stand out as a tourist. A person entering a place, and feeling entitled to take any object I please, labelling everything “souvenir”.”
Ashley Hemmings is a visual artist currently based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. She received her BFA in Visual Arts from Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2018. Her research-based art practise has led her to partner with environmental scientists, cognitive psychologists, and horticulturalists, to consider the intersection of many different ways of looking at and interacting with the natural world. Ashley has participated in group shows across Newfoundland at galleries such as Eastern Edge, The Grenfell Art Gallery, The Tina Dolter Gallery, and The Woody Point Heritage Theatre. Most recently, Ashley has shown her solo projects Plant Matter and Who Names the Ferns? at the Memorial University of Newfoundland Botanical Garden.
