Indigenous Cultural Diversity Training with Kevin Coffey + First Light

Arts for Equity began with grounding. Our first training session was led by First Light Friendship Centre, our long-time community partner and collaborator on this project and programming at Eastern Edge Artist-run Centre. This training was delivered by Kevin Coffey, a Knowledge Sharing Guide, who offered thoughtful guidance on cultural humility, and respectful engagement with Indigenous peoples and communities in this province and across Canada.

Being in that space together allowed the Arts for Equity coordinators alongside the wider Eastern Edge team to learn and also unlearn. We reflected on the histories of this land, our roles within it, and what it means to meaningfully practice decolonization and indigenization across the arts. The session emphasized that cultural humility is not a checklist: it is ongoing work, rooted in listening, reciprocity and accountability.

We remain deeply grateful to First Light for leading this session and grounding Arts for Equity in the responsibilities we share on this unceded lands. This training continues to shape how we show up for our community, and how we build more inclusive and culturally safe creative spaces.
