Eastern Edge Gallery seeks an enthusiastic recent graduate from Memorial University/Grenfell to take on the role of Gallery Assistant & Logistics Coordinator. This is an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate (must have graduated in the last 2 years) from MUN/Grenfell to join Eastern Edge Gallery on a full time basis. Eastern Edge is the only artist-run centre in the province dedicated to contemporary art practice.
The chosen candidate (depending on approval from MUN also) will work alongside Gallery Director on a day to day basis, implementing the wide range of contemporary art programming at Eastern Edge including: contemporary art exhibitions, special events, community partnerships, a summer festival and so much more. Gallery Assistant & Logistics Coordinator – Eastern Edge Gallery, St. John’s, NL
Eastern Edge Gallery is a nonprofit artist-run centre dedicated to the presentation and promotion of contemporary art and its practices. The Gallery Assistant and Logistics Coordinator must possess a strong knowledge of national contemporary art activity, a commitment to supporting local artistic practice, and a familiarity with and enthusiasm for artist-run culture. They are specifically responsible for installation coordination, event logistics, general administrative duties and assisting the Executive Director. They also contribute to the overall vision and development of programming within the gallery.
Specific Tasks
The Gallery Assistant and Logistics Coordinator will work in conjunction with the Executive Director to coordinate gallery activities, organize and install exhibitions, maintain the gallery space and the presence and visibility of Eastern Edge Gallery, its exhibitions, events and educational programs within the local,national and international community. He/she/they will coordinate documentation of exhibitions and events, compile and maintain the gallery contact list for event promotion purposes, regularly update the gallery’s archives, coordinate the arts library in conjunction with VANL-CARFAC, and coordinate the organization of exhibition installation and special events including volunteer and member help.They will also assist with outreach activities to develop new audiences in schools and the broader provincial community and book all travel and accommodations for visiting artists.
Responsible for daily administrative duties such as: office maintenance, visitor reception, answering phone and email and general office supply orders. Gallery Assistant and Logistics Coordinator’s primary role is to make sure everything concerning the organization, installation, documentation and maintenance of exhibitions and events at the gallery run smoothly. They will also assist the Director and the Festival Committee in the planning and development of HOLD FAST Contemporary Art Festival with specific responsibilities listed below.
These are the areas of specific responsibility:
Installation preparation
prepare all materials for installation needs
coordinate volunteers for installation/deinstallation
coordinate with artists for exhibition installation needs
assist artists with their needs, installation and maintenance of exhibition
coordinate artist travel, requirements and accommodations
coordinate documentation of exhibitions
Summer Festival
assist with coordination of artists, volunteers and participants
assist with logistics; installations, set up of venues and offsite projects
documentation and social media content coordination
Daily administrative
office and gallery maintenance
reception (answering phone, e-mail, visitor reception)
general office supply orders
assistance to grant preparation (maintaining up-to-date gallery statistics in Excel spreadsheets)
ensure that someone is present at the gallery, provides security,opens and locks up for all gallery events including rentals
coordinate volunteers
maintain and develop membership
Communications/Promotions Assistance
maintaining email list
maintain membership mailing lists
coordinate postering and promotional material distribution
assist with promotions
coordinate and generate social media content
Outreach activities assistance
assist with workshops and outreach activities in conjunction with exhibitions
assist with application for funding for outreach activities
Knowledge and Skills Required
Working knowledge, appreciation of, and participation in, the arts
University or college courses in the arts, information management, communications, or similar studies.
Training or previous experience in art installation, construction and gallery maintenance.
Passion, vision and a desire to make a difference in their community.
Information management and office administration.
Must possess strong written and verbal skills.
Must be a superior organizer and planner.
Demonstrated analytical skills.
Demonstrated thoroughness and attention to detail.
Strong computer skills, particularly in database management and design (Adobe Creative Suite).
Must be able to meet deadlines, perform under pressure and delegate tasks when required.
Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Design skills an asset.
