Call for Main Gallery Submissions

Eastern Edge’s Main Gallery is our primary exhibition space, featuring contemporary work from provincial, national, and international artists. Our Main Gallery programming seeks to facilitate critical dialogue concerning issues in contemporary art and society, actively encouraging emerging and established artists whose work speaks to feminist, multicultural, queer, and other diverse perspectives.

We are dedicated to cultural diversity in our programming, and encourage applications from artists, art collectives, and curators of diverse communities and backgrounds. We accept applications from local, provincial, national, and international artists for the Main Gallery. We strive to support the needs of our successful applicants; please do make us aware of any flexibility or supports you need that are not covered here.

We are not currently accepting submissions for the Main Gallery.

The next call for submissions is tentatively scheduled to open in June 2025 and close in September 2025.

What We Provide:

  • Eastern Edge pays artist fees in accordance with the current CARFAC Fee Schedule under Category 1.* Artists exhibiting in the Main Gallery will be paid an artist fee of $2,475.
  • Exhibiting artists will be offered the opportunity to give an artist talk or workshop for an additional fee of $520.
  • We offer a modest travel budget of up to $600, and a return shipping budget of up to $350.
    • We encourage selected artists and curators to apply for additional travel and project funding if necessary. If required, the gallery will be pleased to assist with letters of support.
  • We will have the exhibition photo documented.

* We pay CARFAC category 1 as minimum for all our art programming. Fees will be amended to reflect the current year upon payment.

Expectations of Exhibiting Artists:

  • Exhibiting opportunities at Eastern Edge are artist-driven, meaning that exhibition curation and install are the responsibility of the artist (with limited supplementary advice and help from staff, if required). Those with accessibility concerns will not be asked to complete physical installations; EE staff will make accommodations on a case-by-case basis.
  • Artists must arrange their own shipping to the gallery.
  • Artists must arrange their own accommodations, and their own travel to and from St. John’s (keeping in mind EE’s travel budget, listed above).
  • Artists should be present for the exhibition’s opening reception, if feasible.
  • In the case of an emergency, an artist may defer and reschedule their exhibition once. If the exhibition is cancelled for a second time, the artist must reapply for the opportunity to exhibit.

Application Process:

We accept submissions via Google form, or by email.

All submissions must include, in the following order:

  • First and Last Name, Pronouns, Address, and Phone Number. For artist collectives, please list the first and last names of all artists/members of the collective and the name of your collective (if applicable).
  • You are welcome (but not obligated) to self-identify as IBPOC, LGBTQ2SIA+, disabled, femme, or any other community that is important to your identity. Your identity will not be a deciding factor in your application. This information is for internal purposes, to help us reflect on and improve our outreach and alignment with our values. Your answer will not be shared with anyone other than Eastern Edge staff and the selection committee. Only the information in your artist bio will be used in public-facing materials.
  • Artist Bio (approx. 150 words)
  • Artist Statement outlining an overview of your practice/interests (max. 500 words)
  • Exhibition Proposal clearly outlining what the work is, and how it will be presented (max. 500 words)
  • Summary outlining a brief, condensed version of your proposal (max. 50 words, 2 sentences). This summary will be used to remind jury members of your proposal during the selection process, so it should be short and easy to understand.
  • Current CV (max. 2 pages)
  • Outline of your install experience (2-3 sentences)
  • Outline of technical equipment and support needed
  • A maximum of 10 images, video, or audio to support proposal
  • Image List in PDF format to accompany the images/videos/audio you have provided. The image list should include the following information for each image: title, medium, date, dimensions, and a brief description if desired.
  • If this is a submission for a curated or collaborative show with two or more artists, please include a CV for each artist and a Curatorial Statement if necessary. You may submit a maximum of 5 images, video, or audio for each artist, along with an Image List in PDF format.

NOTE:
Images should be in JPEG or PNG format.
Video clips should be in MP4 or .MOV format.
Audio should be in MP4 or .WAV.

Submissions can either be completed through the Google form, or sent via email to easternedgegallery@gmail.com. For email submissions, please indicate “Main Gallery Submission” in the subject line. Please put all your written information into a single PDF document that can be attached to the email. All files should be attached in the formats requested above, and must not exceed 25 MB. If you decide to fill out the Google form, you do not need to send any part of your submission via email.

Please ensure that all the required info listed above is included in your application, and that word counts are adhered to. Incomplete applications, or submissions that do follow guidelines, will not be considered.

Accommodations:

We are happy to accept exhibition proposals in alternative formats including audio or video submissions, or a Zoom interview which will be recorded for the jury. All submission formats will require you to email us a summary of your proposal (max. 100 words), images, and links to audio/video work. If submitting a video or audio file, please ensure it is no longer than 10 minutes and describes, in the following order:

  • your proposed exhibition
  • your artistic practice/interests
  • your art/gallery experience
  • outline of technical equipment and support needed

If you would like to schedule a Zoom interview to submit your proposal, please email easternedgegallery@gmail.com to speak to one of our staff members! Interviews must take place before the submission deadline, so please ensure that you reach out at least two weeks before the submission deadline.

Please note: Artists may apply to multiple opportunities available at Eastern Edge; each opportunity requires a separate application. There is no guarantee that your application will be selected for multiple opportunities. Eastern Edge staff members have no say in the Programming Committee’s selection of successful applicants.
