Call for rOGUE Gallery Submissions

The rOGUE Gallery is a 4 x 7 metre space within Eastern Edge dedicated to showcasing work by Eastern Edge members, with a special focus on local practices and works by artists with a connection to Newfoundland and Labrador, artists in the emerging stages of their career, and experimental art practices. We accept applications for exhibitions, interventions, curatorial projects/group shows, and other forms of creative expression.

We are dedicated to cultural diversity in our programming, and encourage applications from artists, art collectives, and curators of diverse communities and backgrounds. We strive to support the needs of our successful applicants; please do make us aware of any flexibility or supports you need that are not covered here.

What We Provide:

  • Eastern Edge pays artist fees in accordance with the current CARFAC Fee Schedule under Category 1. Artists exhibiting in the rOGUE Gallery will be paid an artist fee of $535.*
  • When funding allows, exhibiting artists will be offered the opportunity to give an artist talk or workshop for an additional fee of $563.*
  • We encourage selected applicants to apply for additional project funding if necessary. If selected applicants live outside of the St. John’s Metro Area, we encourage them to apply for additional funding for travel costs. If required, the gallery will be pleased to assist with letters of support.
  • We will have the exhibition professionally documented.

* We pay CARFAC category 1 as minimum for all our art programming. Fees will be amended to reflect the current year upon payment.

Expectations of Exhibiting Artists:

  • Exhibiting opportunities at Eastern Edge are artist-driven, meaning that the majority of exhibition curation and install are the responsibility of the artist. However, as the rOGUE is an entry-level gallery, staff will be available to help and advise as needed. Those with accessibility concerns will not be asked to complete physical installations; EE staff will make accommodations on a case-by-case basis.
  • Artists should be present for the exhibition’s opening reception, if feasible.
  • In the case of an emergency, an artist may defer and reschedule their exhibition once. If the exhibition is cancelled for a second time, the artist must reapply for the opportunity to exhibit.

Notes on Feasibility:

Located in a 130+ year-old building, Eastern Edge’s gallery has some limitations on what is feasible for installations. We are unable to drill/hammer into our ceilings due to the unknown location of pipes and other materials, which means that most instances of suspending things in the gallery will not be feasible. If there are elements of your exhibition proposal that involve mounting or suspending elements from the ceiling, install changes or compromises may need to be considered.

Application Process:

We accept submissions via Google form, or by email.

All submissions must include:

  • First and Last Name, Pronouns, Address, and Phone Number. For artist collectives, please list the first and last names of all artists/members of the collective and the name of your collective (if applicable).
  • Artist Bio or a short ‘about you’ (approx. 150 words)
  • Artist Statement outlining an overview of your practice/interests (max. 250 words)
  • Exhibition Proposal (max. 500 words)
  • Summary outlining a brief, condensed version of your proposal (max. 50 words, 2 sentences). This summary will be used to remind jury members of your proposal during the selection process, so it should be short and easy to understand.
  • A maximum of 10 images, video, or audio to support proposal
  • Image List in PDF format to accompany the images/videos/audio you have provided. The image list should include the following information for each image: title, medium, date, dimensions, and a brief description if desired.
  • Current CV or short list of art/gallery experience
  • Brief description of your relationship to Newfoundland and Labrador. This will help us determine your eligibility to the rOGUE Gallery, as the space is dedicated to showcasing work by Eastern Edge members, with a special focus on local practices and works by artists with a connection to Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • You are welcome (but not obligated) to self-identify as IBPOC, LGBTQ2SIA+, disabled, femme, or any other community that is important to your identity. Your identity will not be a deciding factor in your application. This information is for internal purposes, to help us reflect on and improve our outreach and alignment with our values. Your answer will not be shared with anyone other than Eastern Edge staff and the selection committee. Only the information in your artist bio will be used in public-facing materials.
  • If your application engages with specific cultural knowledge and/or languages, please describe your relationship to these cultures. If you are unsure if this applies to you, please read this document.
  • Outline of technical equipment and support needed
  • If this is a submission for a curated or collaborative show with two or more artists, please include a CV for each artist and a Curatorial Statement if necessary. You may submit a maximum of 5 images, video, or audio for each artist, along with an Image List in PDF format.

NOTE:
Images should be in JPEG or PNG format.
Video clips should be in MP4 or .MOV format.
Audio should be in MP4 or .WAV.

Submissions can either be completed through the Google form, or sent via email to easternedgegallery@gmail.com. For email submissions, please indicate “rOGUE Gallery Submission” in the subject line. Please put all your written information into a single PDF document that can be attached to the email. All files must not exceed 25 MB. If you decide to fill out the Google form, you do not need to send any part of your submission via email.

Please ensure that all the required info listed above is included in your application, and that word counts are adhered to. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Accommodations:

We are happy to accept exhibition proposals in alternative formats including audio or video submissions, or a Zoom interview which will be recorded for the jury. All submission formats will require you to email us a summary of your proposal (max. 100 words), images, and links to audio/video work. If submitting a video or audio file, please ensure it is no longer than 10 minutes and describes, in the following order:

  • your proposed exhibition
  • your artistic practice/interests
  • your art/gallery experience
  • outline of technical equipment and support needed

If you would like to schedule a Zoom interview to submit your proposal, please email easternedgegallery@gmail.com to speak to one of our staff members! Interviews must take place before the submission deadline, so please ensure that you reach out at least two weeks before the submission deadline.

Membership:

Exhibitors in the rOGUE Gallery must be active Eastern Edge Members. Selected applicants who do not have an active membership will be asked to pay a membership fee before the term of their exhibition. If an individual cannot pay for membership for any reason, accommodations can be discussed with the Eastern Edge team. The rOGUE Gallery Programming Committee will consider all applications equally, regardless of an applicant’s membership status.
