Call for Eastern Edge Studios Artists in Residence

Eastern Edge’s Studio hosts several artist residencies each year. Located in a creative hub set right on the harbour, our open-concept studio functions as an art studio, office space, event venue, and public arts library. Our island location provides a chance for artists to engage with our beautiful landscape, the unique culture of Newfoundland & Labrador, and our vibrant St. John’s art community. Typically lasting 6 weeks in duration, Eastern Edge residencies are artist-driven opportunities that allow artists time and space to develop their creative projects.

We are dedicated to cultural diversity in our programming, and encourage applications from artists, art collectives, and curators of diverse communities and backgrounds. We accept applications from local, provincial, national, and international artists and curators at any stage in their career. We strive to support the needs of our successful applicants, please do make us aware of any flexibility or supports you need that are not covered here.

We are not currently accepting submissions for Studio Residencies.

The next call for submissions is tentatively scheduled to open in June 2025 and close in September 2025.

AVAILABLE RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITIES:

  • February 5 – March 20, 2027
  • April 9 – May 22, 2027
  • June 11 – July 24, 2027
  • August 13 – September 25, 2027
  • October 15 – November 27, 2027

Please note: Residencies will last between 4-6 weeks, depending on the artist’s availability. Staff will assign programming slots to artists and will do their best to accommodate any specified availability. Artists may decide when they arrive and leave within the designated slot, as long as they spend between 4-6 weeks in residence.

What We Provide:

  • 24 hr access to the open plan studio space for the duration of the residency.
  • All resident artists are provided their own designated area. Please note up to three artists and a curator or writer may be working in the studio at any one time.
  • An open working space where artists can engage with other visiting and local artists.
  • Eastern Edge pays artist fees in accordance with the current CARFAC Fee Schedule under Category 1. Artists in residence will be paid a fee of $2,247.
  • Artists in Residence will be offered the opportunity to give an artist talk or workshop for an additional fee of $563.
  • We offer a modest travel and accommodations stipend of up to $600.
    • We encourage selected artists and curators to apply for additional travel and project funding if necessary. If required, the gallery will be pleased to assist with letters of support.

* We pay CARFAC category 1 as minimum for all our art programming. Fees will be amended to reflect the current year upon payment.

Expectations During the Residency:

  • Resident artists are expected to actively create within the studio space for at least 20 hours a week.
  • Be willing to hold open studio hours with the public for a minimum of one day a week.
  • Be respectful of the physical space, the other artists sharing the studio with you, the staff working in the studio, and of the local community.
  • Ensure that the studio space is returned to the condition it was found in when the residency began.
  • In the case of an emergency, an artist may defer and reschedule their residency once. If the residency is cancelled for a second time, the artist must reapply for the opportunity.

Notes on Feasibility:

Located in a 130+ year-old building, Eastern Edge’s studio has some limitations on what is feasible for residencies. Our studio space does not have special ventilation for things such as oil painting, spray painting, or sculptural practices using grinding or sanding that would produce dust/airborne particles.

Additionally, as the EE studio is an open concept shared space for artists, staff, and the public, practices that involve excessive noise disruptions will unfortunately not be feasible for our residency program.

Application Process:

We accept submissions via Google form, or by email.

All submissions must include, in the following order:

  • First and Last Name, Pronouns, Address, and Phone Number. For artist collectives, please list the first and last names of all artists/members of the collective and the name of your collective (if applicable).

  • Residency Proposal outlining your intended area of research/experimentation/creation (max. 500 words or filmed proposal)
  • Summary outlining a brief, condensed version of your proposal (max. 50 words, 2 sentences). This summary will be used to remind jury members of your proposal during the selection process, so it should be short and easy to understand.

Your identity will not be a deciding factor in your application. This information is for internal purposes, to help us reflect on and improve our outreach and alignment with our values. Your answer will not be shared with anyone other than Eastern Edge staff and the selection committee. Only the information in your artist bio will be used in public-facing materials.

  • Date availability – from the residency time slots listed at the top of this page, please tell us your first and second preferences. We cannot guarantee that selected artists will be assigned their preferred time slots. However, we do take this information into consideration when scheduling successful applicants.
